Our State Constitution has very important protections for unions that must be preserved. For instance, collective bargaining is a constitutional right, state pensions cannot be diminished, and civil service appointments and promotions must be made by merit.
Labor should be focused on building from this strength at a Constitutional Convention to INCREASE WORKER PROTECTIONS. For instance, there should be an amendment preventing any changes to the percent of pension contributions by employees. In addition, the amendment should also prevent any changes to pensions and benefits for future employees, which is a huge issue now. Government employers must be obligated to negotiate with worker organizations — they are not now.
