Strengthen Unions

Our State Constitution has very important protections for unions that must be preserved.  For instance, collective bargaining is a constitutional right, state pensions cannot be diminished, and civil service appointments and promotions must be made by merit.

Labor should be focused on building from this strength at a Constitutional Convention to INCREASE WORKER¬† PROTECTIONS.¬† For instance, there should be an amendment preventing any changes to the percent of pension contributions by employees.¬† In addition, the amendment should also prevent any¬†changes to pensions and benefits for future employees, which is a huge issue now.¬†Government employers must be obligated to negotiate with worker organizations — they are not now.
